A sustainable drainage system (SuDs, SuDS, SUDS) is designed to reduce the potential impact of stormwater surface discharges, especially severe rainstorms, for both new developments, as well as, the retrofitting of existing developments, as outlined in the SUDS design approach in Figure on the left.

SUDS is a closed loop system that slows down, spreads and sinks stormwater discharges, unlike conventional stormwater management which paves, pipes and pollutes stormwater runoff. This concept is illustrated in Figure 5on the right which compares the natural hydrological system, a conventional engineered stormwater management approach, and, a responsible approach for stormwater management as in SUDS. Another comparative concept for impervious and pervious surfaces is shown in Figure below. |
